Description

The TPI Model 505 is a combination photo and contact tachometer that also measures surface speeds of belts and wheels.

Model 505 Measurement Procedure:

Unscrew contact collar from optical end of 505 (if attached).
Attach a piece of reflectIive tape on the rotating object to be measured.
Depress and hold the START button and then press the Photo button (lower right) on the 505.
With the start button depressed, point the optical end at the rotating surface so the relective tape passes the lens every rotation.
Read the RPM on the LCD display

Tech Tips

Field Testing the TPI 505 Photo Tachometer

Point the 505 at the palm of your hand and press the on button. You should see light on your hand from the lens of the 505. If you do not, replace the batteries and test again.
Point the 505 at a fluorescent light (closer to the light is better). Press the on button. The displayed reading should be 7200RPM +/- 10 RPM.

Can I test my 505 photo tachometer to make sure it is operating properly?
Yes, testing the 505 is easy.

Point the 505 at the palm of your hand and press the on button. You should see light on your hand from the lens of the 505. If you do not, replace the batteries and test again. Point the 505 at a fluorescent light (closer to the light is better). Press the on button. The displayed reading should be 7200RPM +/- 10 RPM.
My 505 is reading higher than the RPM being measured. What might be wrong?Try replacing the batteries. As the batteries get weak the reading will increase. The low battery indicator (bat) will display to indicate the batteries require replacement.
